A scale weighs everything — bone, muscle, organ, fat, water, food in your digestive tract. Weight fluctuates by 3-5 pounds over a single day based on hydration and digestion alone. It's a noisy signal.

Body fat percentage is a cleaner signal: what fraction of your total body mass is adipose (fat) tissue?

What the Numbers Mean

Men:

  • Essential fat: 2–5%
  • Athletic: 6–13%
  • Fitness: 14–17%
  • Acceptable: 18–24%
  • Obese: 25%+

Women:

  • Essential fat: 10–13%
  • Athletic: 14–20%
  • Fitness: 21–24%
  • Acceptable: 25–31%
  • Obese: 32%+

Women naturally carry more essential fat due to hormonal and reproductive function. Comparing a woman's body fat to male ranges is a category error.

Estimation Methods (Accuracy vs. Accessibility)

DEXA scan: Gold standard. X-ray-based, measures fat, muscle, and bone independently. Accurate to ±1-2%. Costs $50-150 at imaging centers. Worth doing once as a baseline.

Hydrostatic weighing: Very accurate (±1-3%). You're weighed submerged in water. Uncommon outside research settings.

Bioelectrical impedance (BIA): Consumer smart scales use this. Sends a small current through the body; fat and muscle conduct differently. Accuracy varies widely (±3-8%) depending on hydration status. Most consumer scales are systematic overestimates or underestimates depending on body type.

Skinfold calipers: Trained measurement of fat folds at specific body sites. Accurate within ±3-4% with consistent technique. Inexpensive but requires practice.

Navy method (circumference): Uses neck and waist measurements (and hip for women). Accuracy ±3-5%. Not reliable for athletes with atypical proportions but works reasonably well for average bodies.

Why This Number Matters More Than Scale Weight

If you're exercising and eating well, your weight might stay constant while your body composition improves significantly — losing fat and gaining muscle simultaneously. The scale says nothing changed. The mirror and body fat percentage tell the real story.
