Flooring Calculator: How Much Material You Need Including Waste

By David Brown · July 2026 · 3 min read

Flooring material is calculated from the room's square footage, but the amount you actually need to order is higher than the raw square footage once waste from cuts, pattern matching, and mistakes is factored in.

Measuring square footage itself is straightforward for a rectangular room (length times width), but most rooms include closets, alcoves, or irregular corners that need to be measured and added separately rather than estimated by eye.

Waste Factor by Installation Pattern

A straight-lay installation (planks running parallel to the longest wall) typically needs a 5-10% waste buffer. Diagonal layouts increase waste to roughly 10-15% because more pieces need angled cuts at the walls. Herringbone and other complex patterns can push waste to 15-20% or more, since nearly every piece involves a cut.

Doorways and Closets

It's easy to forget to include closet floor area in the total, and doorway thresholds where flooring transitions to another room or material also consume material that's easy to underestimate if you're only measuring the visually "main" part of the room.

Ordering in Fixed Units

Flooring is typically sold by the box (covering a fixed square footage per box) or by the plank/roll, not in arbitrary square footage amounts. After calculating total square footage including waste, round up to the nearest full box or unit — buying a fraction of a box isn't possible, and running one plank short mid-installation is a bigger problem than having a partial box left over.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much extra flooring should I order for waste?

5-10% extra is typical for a straight-lay pattern, but diagonal layouts need closer to 10-15% and complex patterns like herringbone can need 15-20% or more, since more of the material requires angled or irregular cuts.

Does the waste percentage change based on installation pattern?

Yes significantly — straight-lay patterns waste the least material since most pieces run full-length, while diagonal and herringbone patterns require many more angled cuts, increasing the waste percentage accordingly.

Should I include closets in my square footage?

Yes — closet floor area is easy to overlook but still needs flooring material, and forgetting it is one of the most common reasons an order comes up short mid-installation.

What if my flooring is sold in fixed box sizes?

Calculate your total square footage including the waste buffer, then round up to the next full box — since partial boxes generally aren't sold, and running short during installation is more disruptive than having a partial box of extra material left over.
