Pythagorean Theorem Calculator: Practical Uses Beyond Math Class

The Pythagorean theorem: a² + b² = c², where c is the hypotenuse (longest side) of a right triangle. You learned this in middle school. Here's where it actually matters outside of math class.

Construction: The 3-4-5 Rule

The most practical application: checking if a corner is square.

A right angle produces a 3-4-5 triangle: 3² + 4² = 9 + 16 = 25 = 5².

To check a corner: measure 3 feet along one wall, 4 feet along the other. The diagonal between those two points should be exactly 5 feet if the corner is 90°. If it's not, the corner isn't square.

Contractors scale this up: 6-8-10, 9-12-15, or any multiple of 3-4-5.

Screen and Display Sizes

TV sizes are measured diagonally. A "65-inch TV" has a 65-inch diagonal — but what's the actual width and height?

Standard 16:9 ratio: if diagonal = 65 inches

Width = 65 × (16/√(16²+9²)) = 65 × (16/18.36) ≈ 56.7 inches

Height = 65 × (9/18.36) ≈ 31.9 inches

That 65" TV is about 4.7 feet wide and 2.7 feet tall — useful when planning placement.

Distance Calculations

Straight-line distance between two points on a grid (or map):

d = √((x2-x1)² + (y2-y1)²)

Walking 3 blocks east and 4 blocks north: straight-line distance = 5 blocks.

Ramp and Stair Calculations

Ramp rise and run → hypotenuse length (total ramp length).

ADA standard: maximum 1:12 slope (1 inch rise per 12 inches run).

A 24-inch rise requires: horizontal run of 288 inches (24 feet), ramp length = √(24² + 288²) ≈ 289 inches.
