Why β2 Makes the System Work
Take a sheet with dimensions 1 Γ β2. Fold it in half along the long edge: the new sheet is β2/2 Γ 1. Simplify: multiply both dimensions by β2/β2 to get 1 Γ β2. Same ratio. The sheet is self-similar under halving.
No other aspect ratio has this property. If a sheet is 1 Γ 1.5, folding in half gives 0.75 Γ 1 β a different ratio. The β2 rectangle is the unique fixed point of the βfold in halfβ operation.
